Naming Social Structure: Individuals vs. Institutions ( data shows racial bias persists in america

While i was reading this text by Salim Muwakkil i found her article to be interesting as well as true. I suppose i knew that most of this was true but to have everything written and with so many facts make it seem more real.
This first quote i chose was “For us, the most surprising and disheartening... Bertrand said."  This quote did not come to a shock to me but it has a lot to do with what Muwakkil is talking about how racism still does exist today. But i found it funny how people get judged because their name doesn’t sound white. So even if a person a better resume and has better experience then a person who is white they won’t get the job because they are black
My second quote is “The study found that…the labor market”. This quote is very important because it talks about how white people get better jobs then blacks even though they have worse criminal records. This is important because they are saying that even though lets say a white man goes around raping women and a black man went to jail for drinking and driving the white man when he gets out of prison will still be able to find a better job then a black man which isn’t right. This is one aspect of racism that also still goes on today.
My last quote is “Not surprisingly, whites… black men without them.” This quote also tie back into the last one this had to do with how white men will still be more hirable if he did have a record  even if the black man didn’t have a one. To me this makes no sense because America is supposed to be a place of equal opportunity and even after all these years that still doesn’t happen. No matter how many times things seem to get better there is always someone going to be the underdog.

So apparently i did the wrong blog last time but this is what i had to say about Kozol when i read what he had to say i thought in someways without saying it he was blaming the city for everything bad that was happening to those people. Kozol said that the city made it seem as if those people wanted to live like that. That they wanted to get cancer from the crematorium. But in reality everyone just wanted to live happily. but when the city puts people who are in the same situation together they will all mope around and not want better for themselves.

  1. Good points here... but include full quote when you use them so that a reader can make sense of what you are saying!
