A connection not to a reading sorry but the the video that Andres showed us

When I first started reading this article a lot of what she has said reminded me about the video we had saw when Dr. Bogad was out. The African women in the Video had talked about how when she was younger she used to read books about kids of white skin and with pretty hair and blue eyes. Everything she had read was very stereotypical of a white person. Because she wasn’t from America she had never met a white person in her country before she could only picture them or know how they would act according to what she had read in her books. So when she moved to America she couldn’t believe that everything was different from her books. This was the same for her roommate who though all Africans were poor, skinny, came from poor families who had barely anything to eat and AIDs. Her roommate thought this because of the things she had seen on TV as well as what she had read in books. So to connect these two stories when Christensen writes that “When we read Children’s books, we aren’t just reading cute innocent stories, we are discovering the tools with which a young society is manipulated.”  Christensen is saying that movies and children’s book have somewhat of a hidden message in it. When kids read books or watch movies over and over again they will think sooner or later that what they are reading and seeing is true. The African women in the video had said that stories shouldn’t be written about lies or about things that will make a good selling book but they should be based on actual events that are going on. Because yes we all know that in Africa there are a lot of people with Aids but this isn’t every where. And Christensen is saying that movies and books are also only telling part of the story not the whole thing. With these movies and books they are telling our children not to have a voice that we always have to behave and that we should not stand up for what we believe in.

  1. I didn't even see that connection until now! That's a really good point, and it's very true. We tend to believe a lot of what we read and it's not always true!

  3. I really like the connection that you made between the article and the video. I never even thought of that!
Films, media and things such as that are starting to get better at creating cultural acceptance but we're still a long ways away.
